First Nations internship program – CareerTrackers

Internships are a great way of providing paid work to First Nations students during their summer and winter university breaks.

The CareerTrackers internship program gives First Nations university students meaningful paid work during summer and winter semester breaks. It introduces interns to the world of work and builds their interest in pursuing a career with NSW Government.

CareerTrackers is a non-profit organisation that links First Nations university students with employers. They provide interns with support and advice during their placement. Interns complete a 12-week summer placement and an optional 4-week winter placement. Interns can enter the program at any point during their university studies and are encouraged to stay until degree completion.

Benefits for agencies

Agencies who have participated in the program have said it’s helped them to attract and retain First Nations people. Other benefits include:

  • Access high potential First Nations talent and contribute to their career development and position them to apply for the NSW Government Graduate Program or other roles in NSW Government
  • Develop a pipeline of future First Nations leaders
  • Contribute to NSW Government being an employer of choice for First Nations people
  • Strengthen your agency’s knowledge and relationship with First Nations communities.

Agencies are encouraged to commit to a relationship with interns that lasts for the duration of their internship, whether one year or longer.
